Sam Bernstein 101st Heavenly Birthday Remembrance Day

Come celebrate the 101st Heavenly birthday of CPL Samuel Bernstein,  Iwo Jima Survivor.  Sammy loved tootsie rolls and put them in his ammo belt to have when he was hungry.  We will be remembering him by sharing Tootsie Rolls on his birthday.  Come view displays about Sammy's life and service as part of the Fifth Marine Division on Iwo Jima.

Connecticut World War II Museum, Research & Education Center
Tentative April 2025

East Hartford, CT.

Come celebrate with us securing a location to open the Connecticut World War II Museum, Research & Education Center.  This Center will be the only World War II Museum in Connecticut.  It will feature displays that Honor and Remember Veterans from all over the world who served during that global war.  The Center is operated by the World War II Legacy Foundation, Inc., a certified, non-profit organization.

We will gather at the Arrivals Gate at Bradley Airport to welcome home Joe and Neal from their trip to Guam and Iwo Jima.  The both traveled with IJAA to those islands for the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

This outstanding film by Joseph Conforti tells the story of Samuel Bernstein, a Marine who served in World War II.  Sammy, a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima, tells in his own words, his tale of two battles. The first is his 36 days of hell on Iwo Jima and the second being a Jew during  WWII in the Marine Corps.  Sammy’s son, Howie Bernstein, will be here to narrate, talk about his Dad and display his battle mementos.

This event is part of the World War II Legacy Foundation's 36-day long commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

The Courageous Women of World War II

During World War II, nearly 350,000 American women served in uniform, both at home and abroad. Come learn about the different ways these courageous women served, who they were and why their jobs were so critical to achieving victory.  We will discuss a few of the local and national female heroes who helped shape women’s roles in American culture and society.  The Presentation is in honor of two of our local female Veterans of World War II, Marie Walsh and Alice D'Attilio.  Memorabilia will be displayed.

Third Annual Iwo Jima / World War II Veterans Reunion

American Legion Post #2.  22 Hooker Ct, Bristol, CT 06010.  1:00 - 4:30 pm.

The American Legion and the World War II Legacy Foundation will be holding the Third Annual Iwo Jima/World War II Veterans Reunion.  The ceremony will include tributes to local WWII Veterans as well as a tribute to Navy Armed Guard Veteran, Dick Fitz.  He will be receiving several acknowlegements and proclamations from local and state officials.  NY artist, Don Scott, will be unveiling and presenting Fitz with a painting done of him.  Other Veteran paintings done by Scott will be on display.  There will be a large display of WWII and Iwo Jima Memorabilia to view.

Battle of Iwo Jima 80th Anniversary Commemoration

Hillstown Grange #87.  617 Hills St. East Hartford, CT  06118.  12:30 - 3:30 pm.

Join us in commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima.  We will hold a ceremony to remember those 100 Servicemen from Connecticut who were killed in the battle.  There will be a presentation about the East Hartford residents who participated in the battle followed by a documentary from the 40th Anniversary Reunion back to the island and battle sites.  Display of mementos about and from the battle and refreshments will be served.

Roger Olmsted Remembrance Day
February 22, 2025

Meet at the parking lot at the rear of Center Cemetery on Elm Street, East Hartford, CT.

East Hartford resident, Roger Olmsted, USMC was killed during the Battle of Iwo Jima 80 years ago today. Please join us for a short service today (Feb 22, 2025) for Roger Olmsted Remembrance Day. We will meet at 3:00 pm. There will be a brief service followed by the placing of a wreath at his gravesite.

80th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima Commemorative wreath placement
February 19, 2025

National Iwo Jima Memorial Monument.  Iwo Jima Way.  New Britain, CT 

The 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima wreath was placed on behalf of the Iwo Jima Survivors Association by the World War II Legacy Foundation on February 19th.  The names of the 100 CT Servicemen killed during the battle were read and a bell tolled for each.

The Four Chaplains Commemoration
February 9, 2025

South Windsor Public Library. 1550 Sullivan Ave, South Windsor, CT 06074.

On February 1943, the Troop Transport ship, SS Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine and sunk in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.  Four Army Chaplains gave their life jackets, and lives, trying to save and comfort the servicemen on board.  Join us for a ceremony and documentary to remember and honor their sacrifice.
